Ever feel like you’re being pulled in five directions at once when you’re trying to start some kind of online income?
One day it’s “build a personal brand.” The next it’s “start a YouTube channel.” Then someone tells you email is dead and Facebook ads are the only way in.
If you’re over 50 and looking at affiliate marketing for the first time, that pull in five directions is exhausting. It’s usually the reason folks quit before they really get going.
There’s a simpler way to think about it. Dean Holland, an online business coach, calls it the “One Business” framework, and it comes down to just four things.
What the “One Business” Framework Actually Means
The idea is simple enough to fit on a sticky note.
One solution.
To one problem.
For one specific group of people.
And at least one hour a day spent getting it in front of them.
That’s the whole thing. No twelve-step funnel. No five income streams running at once. Just one clear offer, for one clear audience, worked on consistently.
What You Can Do While You Wait
If you’ve started down this path, you may not have a finished offer of your own yet. That’s fine. There’s still real work to do in the meantime:
Getting seen by the right people. Adding new readers to your email list. And working toward that first sale – even a small one.
A common approach that works well: run both a personal Facebook profile and a business page, post a few pieces of content a day, let roughly one in five of those posts be a simple “if this sounds like you, raise your hand” type post, and spend real time in the comments and DMs rather than just broadcasting.

None of this needs to feel pushy. It’s just showing up consistently for the one group of people you’ve decided to help.
A Real Example: Why I’m Testing the Premium Path
Here’s something I’ll be upfront about. My own “one solution” right now is helping other folks my age learn the same affiliate marketing processes I’m using myself, through a structured course and community.
There’s a standard way to join, and there’s a premium way. I chose the premium route for a full year – partly as my own test of whether it’s worth it. If it is, I’ll keep my small Alberta corporation running just to handle the commissions side of things.
Why bother with any of this at my stage of life? Honestly, I’m mostly looking to pad what I already collect through Canadian retirement income. It’s not about replacing a paycheck. It’s about a bit of breathing room.
Your reasons will likely look different, and that’s exactly the point of the framework. One specific person’s “why” – not a generic one.
Define Your Own Why
Before picking any solution, problem, or audience, it helps to know what you’re actually working toward.
Maybe it’s being your own boss and stepping away from a day job that’s run its course. Maybe it’s a bit of extra income sitting alongside the job you already have. Greater freedom. More flexibility. An alternate stream of income.
Whatever it is, it helps to put a number on it. Pull out the budget spreadsheet – yes, the boring one – and figure out what amount would actually move the needle for you. Treat that number as your first milestone, not your final destination.
A Quick Reminder
Affiliate marketing after 50 isn’t about finding a shortcut. It takes time, and it takes sticking with one thing long enough to see if it works. A simple, focused path – one solution, solving one problem for one audience in as little as one hour a day – almost always beats chasing five tactics at once. And having someone a few steps ahead to learn from tends to shorten the learning curve quite a bit.
