For Better or Worse: Recommitting to Morning Routines in Semi‑Retirement

For Better or Worse Morning Routines

Five months into semi-retirement, I’ve discovered something I didn’t expect.

I’m sleeping in.

Not dramatically. Just enough that the old rhythm I relied on has quietly slipped out the back door. For years, 6 AM was my golden hour. I’d pop open my trusty old iPad, read the Calgary Herald, ease into breakfast, get cleaned up, and then dive into my marketing tasks. By noon, I felt productive and ready to step into the rest of my day with momentum.

For better or worse morning routines

But lately?

I’m just getting started a couple of hours later than normal.

And it got me thinking about newlyweds.

The Newlywed Phase: All Intentions, All Heart

You know how newly married couples start out with the best intentions?

  • They promise to communicate perfectly
  • Cook together every night
  • Keep the romance alive
  • Never go to bed angry

And for a while…they do.

But then real life settles in.

Schedules shift.

Habits loosen.

The “we’ll always do it this way” becomes “we’ll get back to it soon.”

Semi-retirement isn’t all that different.

The Honeymoon Phase of Semi‑Retirement

In the beginning, I treated my mornings like a sacred commitment…the “for better” part of the vows I made to myself.

I’d rise early.

Get my marketing done.

Build something meaningful before the world even woke up.

It felt good.

It felt aligned.

It felt like I was honouring the life I’m building in this next chapter.

When the Routine Slips (And It Will)

Now?

Well… let’s just say I’m in the “for worse” phase of the relationship.

Sleeping in.

Starting later.

Letting the morning drift a little.

But here’s the thing newlyweds eventually learn and I’m learning it too:

A relationship isn’t defined by the slip-ups.

It’s defined by the recommitments.

Recommitting to What Works

The moment you say,

“Okay, let’s reset. Let’s get back to what works,” everything shifts.

So today, I’m recommitting to my mornings. Not out of guilt but out of clarity. I know how much better my day, my business, and my mindset flow when I honour that early window.

And if you’re building something of your own in this season of life, maybe this is your reminder too:

Your routines don’t have to be perfect.

They just have to be yours.

And you can renew your vows to them anytime.

A Semi‑Retired Life Built on Intention

Semi-retirement gives us freedom. But freedom still needs structure.

Not rigid rules.

Not pressure.

Just gentle commitments that support the life we’re creating.

So whether you’re rising at 6 AM or easing into the day a little later, the real question is:

Are you honouring the version of yourself you’re becoming?

The perfect time is now.
