Aspect Ratios and Resolutions

I’ve got just a short post for you this week regarding aspect ratios and resolutions for images and videos that you place in your content and ads.

My “everything-Facebook-Ads” guru – Jon Loomer has been pumping out a ton of tips in his newsletter this week that led up to Black Friday.

And I believe him when he says he went down a rabbit hole of Meta-recommended aspect ratios for images and videos when working on ad creation.

There were many posts this week and I felt I needed to bring to your attention just one of them.

You are welcome to read more on this here.

And take note that in that article, you can take a snapshot of a handy resource (The Aspect Ratio Grid) to save for later.

Aspect Ratios vs. Pixel Resolutions

I have always had this brain fart when it comes to relating aspect ratios to pixel resolution.

Some further research I did resulted in a good explanation of things.

And these are the notes I took:

Ultra HD

16:9
3840 x 2160 px

Full HD (4 of these fit into Ultra HD)

16:9
1920 x 1080 px

HD (This is what I try to use for images in my Facebook posts.)

16:9
1280 x 720 px

SD (do you remember when this was the standard computer monitor resolution? lol)

4:3
640 x 480

Conclusion

There is plenty more information to read up on regarding Meta Ads aspect ratios and resolutions.

The linked article includes Jon’s sources for coming up with that handy grid.

There are many additional links to follow and I especially recommend
Item # 3 Best Practices for Aspect Ratios under Jon’s Recommendation Sources.

It is from that link there that you can download pdf templates for image aspect ratios.

And I invite you to check out all of my posts in the category of Meta Lead Ads.

Let me know in the comments whether or not you obsess over your content image sizes.

  1. Hi Robert,
Very interesting post! I haven’t really given much thought about Aspect Ratios and Pixel Resolutions, not at this depth anyway. I guess I’m just scratching the surface 🙂 I clicked and followed the link to Jon’s post and it was very informative. Thanks for sharing and all the best!

  2. Hi Robert,
Thanks for making this so easy to understand! Aspect ratios and resolutions can be confusing, but your examples really help. I love that you included practical tips for each resolution, it’s great to know what works best for different types of content.

I’ll definitely check out Jon Loomer’s article and save that Aspect Ratio Grid for future use. And yes, I do get picky about image sizes! It’s so frustrating when something looks good in one place but not in another.

Thanks for sharing such a useful resource!
